Frequently Asked Questions

What is endodontics?
+

Endodontic treatment is the branch of dentistry that treats diseases and injuries of the pulp and periradicular tissues. The word endodontics comes from the Greek words en (inside) and odontos (tooth). An endodontist in Dubai is also called a root canal specialist because they are trained to treat problems associated with the tooth’s interior.
What causes tooth decay?
+
Tooth decay is caused by bacteria that live in dental plaque and produce acid. The acid attacks the tooth, causing cavity formation.
WHow do I know if I need a root canal?
+
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may be a candidate for a root canal:

  • Severe pain when biting or chewing
  • Extreme sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Toothache that doesn’t go away after a few days or weeks
  • A cracked tooth (a symptom of advanced decay)
Does a root canal hurt?
+
It’s important to note that every patient experiences a different degree of discomfort during the procedure. The extent of discomfort will depend on many factors, including the location of the tooth and its condition before treatment. In addition, the dentist will use medications to minimise pain during your visit.
How long does the root canal treatment take?
+
The amount of time required for root canal therapy depends on the number of teeth that need treatment. Typically, it takes two visits to complete the procedure: one for diagnosis and another to perform the actual treatment.
Do endodontists treat gum disease?
+

Endodontic specialists are not licensed to treat gum disease. They focus on treating root canals and performing dentures, crowns and bridges. If you have gum issues that need attention, see a periodontist instead.
What happens after my root canal treatment?
+

After completing your root canal treatment, you’ll need to keep the area clean and dry for seven days. You should avoid chewing on that side of your mouth during this time. The dentist may also prescribe an antibiotic or pain medication after your root canal treatment is completed.
What happens during a root canal?
+

A tooth that has decay or an infection is removed, and the inside of the tooth, known as the pulp chamber, is cleaned out. A filling is placed to protect the inside of the tooth, and then it is sealed with a temporary crown (cap) until permanent crowns can be made. The temporary crown will be removed once your permanent crowns are ready for placement.
