Understanding Aqualyx

WHAT IS AQUALYX?

Aqualyx is an injectable solution which is capable of dissolving stubborn areas of subcutaneous fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. It contains a substance called deoxycholic acid which is found in bile salts in the human body, where it is responsible for digestion of fat. It is a form of injection lipolysis, lipotherapy or intralipotherapy.

WHERE CAN IT BE USED?

It can be used to treat fat pockets on the back, chin, abdomen, arms, underneath the buttocks, hips, thighs and knees. It can also be used to treat pseudo-gynaecomastia, the development of fatty tissue around the nipple, resulting in a “breast”-like appearance in men, (due to weight gain rather than the growth of actual breast tissue as seen in genuine male gynecomastia).

SAFETY

The treatment is extremely safe with minimal side effects provided done by a fully trained medical professional.

As long as you are generally healthy and don’t have any skin diseases or infections in the area treated, there are few medical reasons why you should not undergo this treatment.

CONTRA-INDICATIONS

  • AQUALYX is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • It is also not recommended for those people who have been diagnosed with lipodystrophy or any pathological conditions.
  • It should only be used in people aged 18 – 60 years.
  • Also as it is a sugar based preparation hence it is not recommended for diabetics.
  • Patients with autoimmune conditions such as scleroderma should avoid treatment.
  • Patients with severe liver disease should not be treated with Aqualyx, as the extra fat it has to process could overwork the liver.
  • Any patient with a history of an allergic reaction to an ingredient of Aqualyx should avoid treatment.
  • Patients on blood thinning medication, in particular, warfarin, will almost certainly not be suitable for treatment due to the risk of severe bruising.
  • Patients with severe kidney disease are not suitable for treatment.
  • Excessive obese patients are also not suitable for the treatment.

WILL THERE BE WEIGHT LOSS AFTER THE TREATMENT?

There will not be any much of difference in your weight. The procedure is meant for body contouring rather than weight loss. Dissolving the subcutaneous fat in a particular area will not make a significant difference to the overall weight.

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?

This will depend on the amount of fat that has to be dissolved. You may need from 3 to 6 sessions at monthly intervals depending on the site and amount of fat.

WHEN ARE THE IMPROVEMENTS VISIBLE?

The results may be seen after 3 – 6 weeks of treatment and may continue up to 6 months or even later.

WILL THE FAT COME BACK LATER?

AQUALYX destroys the fat cells completely and hence the fat cannot be stored in the areas treated. However, if you gain weight the fat may get stored in a different distribution in the areas which have not been treated with Aqualyx.
