Colorectal cancer also known as bowel cancer, colon cancer, or rectal cancer, is the development of cancer from the colon or rectum (parts of the large intestine).

Colorectal cancer is more common in men than women and is the third most common cancer in men and the second most common in women. In the UAE, it is the second most common cancer and the second highest cause of cancer deaths.

What are the symptoms of colorectal cancer?

There are usually no symptoms associated with early-stage colorectal cancer which is why it is so important to get screened regularly. The symptoms associated with more advanced stages of colorectal cancer are:

Bleeding in the rectum
Bloody stools (can be bright red or dark depending on the location of the tumour)
A change in bowel habits
Cramps in the colorectal region
Unexplained anaemia (from blood loss)
Weakness and fatigue
Narrow stools or a feeling that your bowel is not empty

While these symptoms may be caused by factors unrelated to colorectal cancer, it is important to seek medical attention early to rule out cancer.

What causes Colorectal Cancer?

Certain factors influence the risk of developing colorectal cancer like one’s family history, age, lifestyle choices and obesity. A history of inflammatory bowel disease can also increase one’s risk of developing the cancer.

You can make healthy and modifiable lifestyle choices to keep the cancer at bay. Avoid diets rich in red or processed meat and ensure you completely avoid or reduce consumption of alcohol. Quit smoking or don’t smoke at all too to decrease your risk factor.
